Ondo, Imo teachers protest over pay ••

Some primary school teachers in Ondo State, under the auspices of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, on Friday took to the streets of Akure, the Ondo State capital, to protest against the payment of their salaries by local government councils.

The teachers said they wanted the state government to take over the payment of their salaries.

The protesters went to the Ondo State Governor’s office, chanting various protest songs.

According to them, there were always delay and other issues because of the way their salaries were paid by local governments.

Speaking during the protest, the state secretary of the union, Mr.  Solomon Igbelowowa, noted that there was a need for the state government to take over the payment of primary schoolteachers’ salaries.

Igbelowowa said local government areas did not have the financial capacity or political will to fund and manage primary schools across the country.

Addressing the protesters, the state governor, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu, commended the teachers for the peaceful protest and assured them he would communicate their message to the National Assembly.

In the same vein, teachers in Imo State on Friday also joined their colleagues across the country to demonstrate against the planned transfer of funding and management of primary schools by the local government areas.

The teachers, dressed in black cloths, marched through various streets in Owerri, the state capital, clutching various placards with inscriptions decrying the situation.

The NUT Chairman in the state, Napoleon Aniche, said the local government areas lacked the capacity to effectively fund primary schools in the country.
