Mother watches helplessly and in horror as crocodile grabs and kills her daughter, 14

Hellen Amondi, 14, and her mother, Margaret Atieno, had gone to fetch water from Lake Victoria’s Ng’ou beach in Homa Bay County. But just as they were preparing to leave after filling their buckets, the unthinkable happened.

A giant crocodile suddenly sprang from under water and grabbed unsuspecting Amondi, who had reportedly gone back to wash mud off her feet before they could proceed home.

“She had finished fetching water. She only went back to clean her legs, during which the crocodile attacked her,” says Atieno, a grief-stricken mum who watched helplessly and in horror as the beast grabbed and killed her daughter.

The only thing that the mother could do at that point was scream at the top of her voice for help to come quickly. Unfortunately, by the time that help arrived, the crocodile had taken off with her daughter’s lifeless body.

“I desperately tried to call neighbors to come to my daughter’s rescue. Sadly, it was too late when they finally heard my screaming,” says Atieno.

The incident sparked outrage across her village. Kenya Wildlife Service South Nyanza Region was forced to immediately dispatch a team to help in search for Amondi’s missing body.

“Our officers are in the lake looking for the girl’s body. We will provide a complete report once that exercise is done,” says Mary Mayande.

For now, Atieno can only pray and hope that her daughter’s body will be found.
